Energy Pyramid
Let our pyramid be your guide! One of Nexus Energy Center’s first and foremost purposes is teaching people realistic, feasible ways they can save energy. As a non-profit, we consider ourselves your local energy experts that strive to educate in a way that makes sense to homeowners. We are NOT going to make any recommendations for energy efficient improvements that do not scientifically and financially make sense.
Learn how to make your home more energy efficient AND reduce your carbon footprint.
Nexus Energy Center Tiny Green Home
Our Tiny Green Home is a great educational tool for the communities throughout Alabama. We take our Tiny Green Home around the state to educate and showcase home energy efficiency measures. Though small in size, our Tiny Green Home has the same components of a traditional house where a variety of sustainable building materials and their performance relative to conventional materials are used – only smaller – 17ft x 8ft.
The Tiny Green Home is the smallest, most energy sustainable home in the state of Alabama.
Why did we make it? The goal of building the Nexus Energy Center Tiny Green Home was to create a net-zero home, show how to lower a home’s carbon footprint, and how good design can make even the smallest of spaces appear bigger. What is a net-zero home? A home that is 60-70% more energy efficient than a model home, and the remaining 30-40% of energy is created with renewables, such as solar, wind, and geothermal, to bring the energy use to zero. Our Tiny Green Home materials include Energy Star rated windows and appliances, spray foam insulation in the walls, ceiling and floors, propane heater, propane on demand water heater, LED lighting, off-grid solar power and weather stripping.
When was it made? In 2015, with the help of volunteers, donations and contributing partners. Money was raised by establishing a Indiegogo account, which allowed people all over the world to donate money to the cause.
How did we make it? In addition to donations from individuals and organizations within the Huntsville community, our Tiny Green Home couldn’t have been built without the support from the Huntsville high tech firm, Project XYZ. Larry Lewis, one of the founders of Project XYZ was the first business to support the project through financial assistance, providing expertise and even allowing his employees to work on the project. From the start to the finishing touches of providing equipment and installation for the solar portion of the Tiny Green Home, Project XYZ has been a huge supporter of the Nexus Energy Center mission.
