April, 2014 Message from the Executive Director
April 8, 2014
A note from the Director-
Dear Nexus Supporters,
It seems like a trend at Nexus to stay super busy because March 2014 was packed.
March 20, Smart Energy Council. We were looking to bring together non-profits from our community as well as our local utility and faith-based groups on the topic of Poverty and the Burden of High Electricity. We know these organizations are helping those that need it most but with the cold winter, the funds to help with bills have long been spent although the needs have diminished. Nexus was bringing the question of “Why are the bills so high?” In a packed Nexus Solution Center, we began discussions of how to alleviate high utility bills by working together. Although winter is gone, many still have unpaid bills or no power at all.
March 27-28, Citibank WHEEL Program Briefing. Nexus was invited to attend a discussion on Energy Efficiency Financing models. A breakthrough in financing for energy efficiency projects for homes has emerged with the help of Citibank, Renewable Funding, NASEO (National Association of State Energy Officials) and a few others and they are naming the program WHEEL (Warehouse Energy Efficiency Loans). Because of the success of the AlabamaWISE program, the WHEEL team is looking to expand the financing to our area. This is an exciting opportunity that Nexus may partake in as we look to serve our AlabamaWISE program statewide.
April 5, 1st Annual Nexus Energy Chili Challenge @Straight to Ale. We had a great turnout of teams and attendees at our fist Chili Challenge. At this fundraiser we raised over $3000 which will help us help others SAVE MONEY by SAVING ENERGY. The event was possible from wonderful volunteers, the Nexus board, State Representative Mike Ball and his Loyal Pickers, CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) chili league, and Straight to Ale. It was a fun Saturday of tasty chili, delightful music, awesome beer and great company. The Nexus staff did a great job organizing the event with the help of Pete Combs from CASI.
I know the rest of April will be packed with more successful Nexus endeavors.
